Baron Corbin has all the ingredients of a top heel.
His mainstream flavor and aloof mannerisms have made him the enemy of a fanbase that skews hipster.
So when the 37-year-old Austin Aries, a longtime indy favorite, became the latest aging veteran to sign a WWE contract, it was only fitting that NXT’s brooding villain immediately mauled him.
Aries will be a great addition to the NXT roster so long as he stays healthy. But before his body breaks down, a feud against Corbin will do wonders for the former NFL star.
Corbin’s minor, yet deliberate, nuances are what make him such a strong heel. NXT didn’t force him as a babyface. Once fans caught on to how hard he was being pushed, they rebelled. Fortunately, Corbin knew how to rebel back.
Corbin knows exactly why fans don’t like him, and he uses it to antagonize them. The character scoffs at independent wrestlers who had to “pay their dues” to build a following after years on the road. Instead, he takes pride in coming from the high-profile lifestyle of the NFL and brags about only having to pick up a phone when he was ready to wrestle.
It’s arrogant. It’s actually pretty cruel. And it’s brilliant.
Corbin is like a self-aware version of Roman Reigns. Instead of uncomfortably barreling through a negative reaction, he not only embraces it but returns the favor by needling the fans. He’s like a scientist with tattoo sleeves, manipulating cells through a microscope.
Aries is the perfect opponent to take Corbin to the next level. Not only will Aries be a natural babyface because of his Internet street cred, but the size differential will make the feud doubly captivating. It’s the big bad wolf versus the small, yet crafty, veteran.
Corbin still has room to improve as a wrestler, and Aries can help get him there. With a series of good matches, Corbin could go from being the most WWE-ready NXT talent to a main roster standout.
If Corbin becomes a more complete wrestler through a successful feud with Aries, nothing will hold him back from breakthrough success in 2016. At that point, he could have potential as a money-drawing heel as fans will pay to see him lose a competitive match rather than jeer his wrestling acumen.
Corbin has shown flashes of brilliance in his few appearances at NXT TakeOver events, but against stiff competition, he is always overshadowed by either the main event or a show-stealing women’s match.
Building a simple David vs. Goliath storyline with Aries will get him to that point. Except, this time, Goliath needs to win.
In a way, it’s Corbin who is now paying his dues by putting in his time in NXT against a much more skilled worker. But this feud will only make him better, whether the hipsters like it or not.
