Analyzing Brock Lesnar's Part-Time Schedule
and Why It Works for WWE
Brock Lesnar is a rare breed in WWE; he is among the few true stars the company has left. This means he is a must-see, once-in-a-lifetime attraction that brings a unique aura to every arena he enters.
Of course, it is easier to make a Superstar feel special when he is not featured on every episode of Raw and SmackDown. But Lesnar is his own entity in how WWE has utilized him since his return to the company four years ago.
From 2012-13, he wrestled a mere five matches: two at Extreme Rules, two at SummerSlam and one at WrestleMania. All of the outings were excellent, but it was apparent WWE wasn't maximizing his star power as much as it could have been.
His two-year deal with the organization was set to expire at WrestleMania 31, and for months, rumors (h/t MMA Weekly) ran rampant that he was headed back to UFC to tie up the loose ends of his mixed martial arts career. He shocked the world on March 24, only days before The Show of Shows, when he announced on ESPN he re-signed with WWE through the next three years.
This was blockbuster news for the wrestling world, where he still has so much left to do. Even after winning the Royal Rumble, King of the Ring and WWE World Heavyweight Championship on four occasions, the possibilities remain endless for what—and who—he can conquer.
As part of the new deal, he has made more appearances on WWE programming over the last year, including at live events and WWE Network specials. From Sheamus to Kofi Kingston, he has mixed it up with a wide variety of fresh faces in addition to renewing old rivalries with The Undertaker and Big Show.
In addition to wrestling more frequently, he has helped boost interest in B-level pay-per-views such as Battleground, Hell in a Cell and Fastlane. Furthermore, he will be returning to SmackDown for the first time in a decade in February.
Lesnar wrestled his first match on WWE TV in 2016 at the Royal Rumble, taking part in the annual Battle Royal for only the second time in his career. Although he was unsuccessful in regaining the WWE World Heavyweight Championship, he now has a ready-made feud for WrestleMania 32 with The Wyatt Family.
Arguably, Lesnar was an attraction long before he broke the undefeated streak of The Undertaker at WrestleMania 30. But there is no doubt that his stock has risen significantly since then, and he is in a league all of his own.
The Beast Incarnate was not the first individual to be offered a part-time contract, but he has without a doubt revolutionized the concept. At a time when WWE is lacking top-tier talent, Lesnar adds an extra element to WWE TV whenever he shows up, regardless of how sporadic his appearances are.
Per Wrestling Inc, Lesnar is making 10 times as much money as he would have been in UFC. He may not be cheap, but he is well worth the investment given how much he has added to the product from an entertainment standpoint, an in-ring standpoint and a business standpoint.
In a way, fans underestimate just how much he means to the current WWE landscape, seeing as how he has been far more involved the past 12 months alone than he ever was before. He contested three of the greatest matches of 2015 with John Cena, Seth Rollins, Roman Reigns and The Undertaker and has not suffered a singles defeat by pinfall since WrestleMania 29.
The argument that he should be working a full-time schedule is a farce. As a prizefighter, there is no reason for him to be around all the time, as his worth to the company would not be nearly as important if he was overexposed as other stars tend to be.
After almost four years, WWE has finally figured out the formula in using "The Sultan of Suplex City" to his full potential: by giving him long-term stories fans can get excited about, protecting him in defeat and letting his exceptional mouthpiece Paul Heyman do the talking for him.
Face, heel, tweener, it's essentially irrelevant. Bringing excitement back to the show any time he resurfaces, Lesnar has been a major focal point of programming dating to his incredible return in 2012 and will continue to electrify audiences and instill a sense of legitimacy for as long as he is around.
