Dianabol: Ex-champ Jean Pascal hopes
Freddie Roach can put him back on title track
LOS ANGELES — Some of boxing’s top fighters have made their way to Freddie Roach’s Wild Card Boxing Club in Hollywood in hopes of enlisting the aid of the seven-time trainer of the year.
The latest to seek out Roach’s coaching is former light heavyweight champion Jean Pascal, the slugger from Montreal who takes on undefeated Sergey Kovalev in a rematch Saturday at the Bell Centre in Pascal’s hometown (HBO, 9:45 p.m. ET). At stake: The unified light heavyweight championship.
That Roach took on Pascal at all and vice versa might seem a bit strange, considering Pascal had been with former trainer Marc Ramsay for two decades, since he was 14. But after a less-than-stellar showing against Cuban Yunieski Gonzalez in July, Pascal felt he needed more than what he was getting, especially with his rematch with Kovalev on the horizon.
“I was with my former coach since I was an amateur, and in the Olympics,” Pascal told USA TODAY Sports. “I won a world title with Marc Ramsay. But after 20 years I decided to make a move to bring my boxing skills and my career to the next level.
“Freddie has the eye of the tiger. He sees things that other coaches can’t see because he was born with something special.  And he has polished it with time and experience, and with some great guys like Oscar (De La Hoya), Manny (Pacquiao) and (Miguel) Cotto. So far I can say that I’m very, very happy with my choice.”
After Pascal’s penultimate workout/sparring session at Wild Card last Thursday, Roach,  talked about their first camp together. The trainer said he put off back surgery to take on Pascal.
“We’ve had a lot of sparring partners, and we’ve had good days and bad days,” Roach said. “His combinations are getting a lot better. We worked on them more in the gym. A lot of mitt work, he looks great in the mitt work. (The sparring) is getting better every day. Today was his best day sparring yet. Tomorrow’s his last day, so we’re ending on a good note. A couple people told me it’s the best they’ve ever seen him, and I hope that shows as well in the fight as it has showed here.
“Sometimes he doesn’t believe in his jab, and I tell him he’s got one of the best jabs in the business. Trying to get a little confidence behind it. Overall it was a good training camp. He’s ready to fight.”
ONE-ON-ONE: With Jean Pascal
In their first go-round, Kovalev got through Pascal’s defense often and seemingly with ease and punished the Haitian-born fighter (30-3-1, 17 KOs), with some vicious right hands and left hooks. By the eighth round of that fight, referee Luis Pabon had seen enough and stopped it.
Roach and Pascal worked to improve that porous defense.
“We worked on a lot of defense, of course, and we’re pushing him back a little bit,” Roach said. “We’re trying to make our offense our defense also. (Kovalev) is a bigger puncher coming forward than he is moving back.
“He is a big puncher. His left hook’s OK, but his right hand’s his best punch and we worked on how to counter that shot.”
Pascal said one of the main things he got out of the camp is ring awareness.
“Sometimes you just fight, you go with your instinct, but Freddie showed me to be aware of where I’m at in the ring,” Pascal said. “Also when I am fighting, what kind of position I am in, and what kind of position I can put the other fighter in.  So that’s the big, big difference I can see. I can say he has some tricks I can’t tell you right now, but just watch the fight on Jan. 30 and you will see everything.”
ONE-ON-ONE: With Sergey “Krusher” Kovalev
While Kovalev, nicknamed “The Krusher,” got though Pascal’s defense early and often in the first fight last March 14, and laid some punishing licks on Pascal, the muscular Canadian never quit and came back in the middle rounds to let Kovalev have it with his own arsenal of head and body shots. Pascal says that’s just part of his physical and mental makeup.
“I’m a boxer, but I have the soul of a warrior, the soul of a soldier,” he said. “It’s never over until it’s over with me. But if you look at the fight, yes, Kovalev was winning the fight … he won probably four rounds, I won three rounds so that was a close fight.”
Asked if a second loss to Kovalev could be the end of his career, Pascal, 33, said, “Right now I’m not thinking about losing because losing is not an option for me. I know for a fact I’m better than Kovalev. Better skilled — he might be a touch stronger than me — but overall I’m a better fighter and I’m going to show the world that March 14, 2015 was just a bad night for me.”
