AUBURN HILLS -- The Detroit Pistons can play small when forced. Some may say it is their best defensive team.
Stanley Johnson benefits most, perhaps, from when it happens, like he did in the fourth quarter of Wednesday's 110-97 win over the Philadelphia 76ers.
For 4 1/2 minutes of a key stretch when the Pistons turned a close game into a comfortable final margin, they went with starting guards Reggie Jackson and Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, Stanley Johnson and Marcus Morris at forwards, and center Andre Drummond.
The Pistons had used that lineup 55 minutes all season.
They went to that group between a pair of Jackson free throws which he made to give the Pistons a 93-90 lead, and 4:35 later, it was 106-94 with less than a minute left.
"They went small and we went to a lineup that I thought was good for us, especially with the spacing, and ball-handling, and the playmaking ability for me, Marcus, Pope and Reggie," Johnson said. "By going small, you put one of your weakest defenders on Andre, so now three or four guys have to come to the paint, and now me and Marcus are going to the boards.
"When people tend to do stuff like that, we're versatile enough to go to another lineup to counteract that, and that's how we won the game tonight."
Johnson, the 19-year-old first-round rookie out of Arizona, had 18 points on 8-of-16 shooting and was key to sparking both the second unit and the finishing group.
He had eight points in the fourth quarter, when he played all 12 minutes, but most impressed Pistons coach Stan Van Gundy on a play with 6:20 left, when he was doubled out top for the first time, and pitched to Jackson for a 3-pointer and a 91-88 lead which Detroit did not relinquish.
"I thought one of the best plays of the night, still at a crucial time, when he came off the handoff up high, they blitzed him, they trapped him with the five-man, and he made a great pass to Reggie in the corner for the three," Van Gundy said. "That's just a great play by a young guy to have the presence, on the first time he gets trapped on the night, to not panic, not cough it up, find the open man."
The Pistons' small lineup has a couple of advantages when they use it.
They get extra playmaking and speed on the floor.
They also are able to switch pick-and-roll plays at every position except center.
"When we all can switch but Andre, we all can help him, so it makes the game a lot, lot easier, that (76ers point guard) Ish Smith doesn't have that space, because every time you get into coverage, you're playing to somebody's weakness," Johnson said. "So every time he spaces out, he can attack or big, or whatever he wants to do. So when we're able to switch, it makes things a lot easier."
The confusion was evident with the 76ers, who had 12 possessions against the Pistons' small lineup in the fourth quarter, resulting in five turnovers and 2-of-5 shooting from the field. They got four free-throw attempts during that stretch but missed them all.
"Teams have a harder time with coming off and making routine plays that they practice every day," Johnson said.
