Exemestane: Relay for Life to remain at Amherst Stadium

AMHERST – Amherst’s 14th Relay for Life will be staying at the Amherst Stadium in June.
Jill Meyers, district co-ordinator for the Canadian Cancer Society, confirmed the stadium will the site of the relay scheduled for June 4. This year, the relay will run from 6 p.m. to midnight.
“We surveyed participants last year after moving to the stadium from the ballfield and the response was overwhelmingly in favour of staying at the rink,” Meyers said. “At the rink we don’t have to worry about the weather, which is good because it rained last year and it would’ve been difficult to make the relay an enjoyable experience.”
This will be Meyers’ first full year as district co-ordinator in place of Sharon Bristol, who took another position with the Canadian Cancer Society. Meyers said while the relay went from 1 p.m. to 1 a.m. last year the society is trying to standardize times across the country to the decision was made to run for six hours.
It also helps enhance the relay as a family event, adding there will be a number of children’s events the night of the relay, possibly starting earlier than the 6 p.m. start time for the relay.
The opening ceremonies and survivors and caregivers’ lap will take place shortly after 6 p.m. while the luminary ceremony will likely be at 7:30 or 8 p.m.
Registration has begun for the relay and Meyers said there are already seven teams in place. Last year there were 21 teams in place, raising $106,000.
Another change this year could see the Parrsboro Relay for Life join with Amherst. Parrsboro had its own relay later in the summer, but organizers there are looking to rejoin the Amherst relay after breaking away several years ago to host their own.
Meyers said the Amherst relay is still seeking a chairperson, or co-chairs, for this year’s event.
