The lights were on and the popcorn was popping on Tuesday, as Mark Gottfried likes to say, but N.C. State was nowhere to be found in its first big home game of the season.

Michigan embraced the ACC-Big Ten Challenge while the Wolfpack couldn’t adjust to the spotlight. Sophomore guard Duncan Robinson scored 17 points to help the Wolverines to a 66-59 road win.
Michigan (5-2) got five 3-pointers Robinson, a Division III transfer, 18 points from star Caris LeVert and kept N.C. State point guard Cat Barber off the foul line. Barber had a career-high 37 points in N.C. State’s win over Winthrop last Friday and attempted 22 free throws.

Barber, who finished with 16 points, didn’t make it to the foul line Tuesday until there were 35.6 seconds left in the game and took just four shots. In the first six games of the season, Barber went to the foul line 75 times.

Robinson is the second transfer from outside Division I in as many games to slice up N.C. State’s perimeter defense. Winthrop’s Jimmy Gavin, a Division II transfer, had 38 points last Friday.

Robinson began his career at Williams College in Massachusetts and averaged 17.1 points per game for the Ephs. He sat out last year after transferring.

N.C. State cut what was a 15-point Michigan lead down to 50-46 after a jumper by Barber at the 7 minute, 48 second mark. Then Robinson and Zak Irvin made 3-pointers on consecutive trips to blow the game back open.

N.C. State lost for the second time in five home games this season.

Sophomore wing Caleb Martin led N.C. State with 19 points and seven rebounds. The Wolfpack couldn’t take advantage of a smaller Michigan lineup. Starting forwards Abdul-Malik Abu and Lennard Freeman combined for two points.
Michigan didn’t need any inside scoring, not with Robinson hitting from outside and LeVert getting to the basket. The Wolverines shot 54.2 percent and out-rebounded N.C. State 18-12 in the first half.

N.C. State led 11-7 after nine minutes, but Michigan started to get into a flow on offense while everyone but Barber went cold for the Wolfpack.
Barber was 5 of 8 in the first half while the rest of the lineup was 6 of 21. Michigan’s lead reached double digits, 28-18 at 3:18, before a 3-pointer from Maverick Rowan and two field goals from Barber.
