Trenbolone: Broncos 'on a mission' to capture first bowl win
This was a season of two firsts and one second for Western Michigan: second in the country in time of possession behind only Stanford, the first time beating a top-25 opponent and the first back-to-back postseason bowl invitations in program history.
Western accepted the invitation for the Popeyes Bahamas Bowl against Middle Tennessee State, scheduled for noon today on ESPN. It’s the Broncos’ seventh bowl appearance overall, and they are seeking their first win.

“Last year was kind of a first for a lot of us, and I think we were just excited to make a bowl last year. But this year I really feel the team is going on a mission to win a bowl,” said junior quarterback Zach Terrell. “We have more experience now going to one of these and what it takes to bridge between having fun and being ready and getting your work done while being in a place like the Bahamas.”

Another first was the season-ending win, 35-30, over then-No. 24 Toledo. The Broncos had never defeated a ranked team before.
“It was big, not only for our confidence but for beating a team of that caliber who was ranked in the top 25 — just getting that win against a team considered one of the best in our league,” Terrell added. The victory boosted Western to a 7-5 regular-season finish (6-2 MAC West) and a share of the division title, the Broncos’ first in 15 years.

Losses to Big Ten teams helped WMU football grow
Western won the time-of-possession battle in every game this season, including games against other national leaders in the category — Central Michigan (No. 5), Georgia Southern (No. 9) and Michigan State (No. 10).

“If a team’s going to hang on to the football, it better have a high third-down conversion percentage, and we do, and I think those two (with successful first downs) go hand in hand,” said third-year head coach P.J. Fleck. “Our players have done a tremendous job of winning first down, making the second downs manageable, which inevitably make third down manageable. No one wants to be in third and 15 or third and 10. But if you get to third and two and third and three, you can sustain those drives, and that’s the type of offense we are.
“I’m all about controlling the football — being able to hang on to it, converting third downs — and I thought we did a better job than last year at resting our defense when we could. We’re not playing to hold on tight, we’re not playing to avoid losing, we’re playing to win.”

For a team boasting over ball control, the Broncos are not afraid to throw the rock around. Terrell went 244-for-365 passing with only eight interceptions, totaling 3,229 yards in 12 games. Junior receivers Daniel Braverman and Corey Davis each cracked 1,200 yards receiving. Davis is second in all-time yards at Western Michigan with 3,602, and Braverman ranks eighth in the nation with an average of 105.8 yards per game.

WMU rushed for 129 first downs and threw for another 148.
“I feel we’re very balanced,” Terrell said. “We don’t really go into the game saying we’re going to pound it down their throat, or we’re going to air it out this game. We really just try to do what we do, take what the defense gives us. And I know that kind of sounds like the typical cliché, but it’s really what we do.”
