Cardinals banged up at running back spot

The Arizona Cardinals have not confirmed a report that running back Chris Johnson has a broken left leg.

The injury was reported Monday by Fox Sports.

Cardinals coach Bruce Arians said earlier in the day it was a bruised knee, but MRI results on Johnson weren’t available then.

Johnson’s agent, Joel Segal, did not respond to text and phone messages seeking confirmation of the report that Johnson fractured his tibia in Sunday’s 19-13 victory at San Francisco on Sunday.

Johnson is in the midst of a comeback year after signing with Arizona late in training camp. He is fourth in the NFL in rushing with 814 yards.

His backup, Andre Ellington, also was hurt in the game. Arians says Ellington has turf toe.

The Cardinals (9-2) will play at the Edward Jones Dome Sunday against the Rams (4-7).

Broncos’ Ward wants full-time officials in NFL • Denver Broncos safety T.J. Ward, one of the most-flagged and heavily fined players in the NFL, recently ripped the officials, suggesting the way to fix the league’s spotty officiating is to give the men in stripes full-time jobs. “I mean, how would you feel if you came to watch a game on Sunday and you had part-time players?” Ward asked.

The ever-thickening rule book and the more-focused microscope have officiating crews tied in knots, with each week bringing a slew of debatable calls, many of them determining the outcome of games.

“I’m playing a game, and I’ve got a guy who spends half his time on carpentry. ... He barely knows the rules,” complained Ward.

Meanwhile, Tennessee Titans interim coach Mike Mularkey said the NFL called how referee Jeff Triplette’s crew handled a late fourth down in Tennessee’s 24-21 loss to Oakland a “poorly officiated play.”

Mularkey said Monday that officials missed a false start by Raiders receiver Michael Crabtree and offensive pass interference in the end zone by receiver Andre Holmes on the two Titans defenders breaking up the pass. The NFL declined to comment to The Associated Press, saying by email the league does not comment on conversations between the officiating department and teams.

Pats’ Gronkowski has bruised knee, report says • An MRI showed that New England Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski has a bruised right knee but no tears, ESPN.com reported. He is not expected to play this week against the Eagles, but he is expected to be back before the end of the regular season.

In another move, New England waived rookie receiver Chris Harper, whose muffed punt in the fourth quarter was a critical play in Sunday’s 30-24 overtime loss to the Denver Broncos.

Dolphins fire offensive coordinator • Offensive coordinator Bill Lazor is the latest Miami coach out of work. The team fired Lazor on Monday, cutting bait with the play-caller whose offense ranks 26th in yards (335.9) and 27th in scoring (20.5). Zac Taylor, who has served as the Dolphins’ quarterbacks coach since 2012, will take over as offensive coordinator.

In the past two months, the Dolphins have fired their head coach (Joe Philbin), their defensive coordinator (Kevin Coyle) and now Lazor. And yet, the team continues heading in the wrong direction. Their 38-20 loss to the Jets was the fourth in the last five games.

Game time change • The NFL has moved the Dec. 13 game between New England and Houston to prime time, replacing the originally scheduled Seattle-Baltimore contest.

The league routinely switches more attractive Sunday afternoon matches to prime time when the previously scheduled night game is not as enticing. The Patriots lead the AFC East and the Texans now are tied for the lead in the AFC South. While Seattle is in playoff contention, Baltimore is not. The Seattle-Baltimore game thus goes to the early afternoon slot and the telecast moves from NBC to Fox.

Chiefs’ Houston has knee strain • Justin Houston, Kansas city’s All-Pro pass rusher, went down when he was tripped by his own teammate while chasing a play in the first half Sunday. He lay face-down on the field while trainers tended to him, then was helped to the sideline and into the locker room. Chiefs coach Andy Reid indicated the injury is similar to one Houston suffered in a playoff loss to the Colts nearly two years ago. In that case, it was a strained knee ligament — depending on the severity of it, such an injury can sideline a player anywhere from two weeks to half a season.
