For the second time in 18 months, the WWE World Heavyweight Title will be vacated because of injury, as Seth Rollins tore his ACL wrestling a match in Dublin.

On Wednesday night, word starting coming out that Seth Rollins suffered an injury wrestling against Kane. Cell phone footage soon followed, which showed Rollins attempting a sunset flip powerbomb from the top turnbuckle. He flipped over Kane, and as soon as he landed, his right leg crumpled, and he went down to the mat. He tried to continue, but couldn't, and the match was stopped as he was helped to the back.

Early reports seemed positive, saying that he just tweaked it and could continue the European tour. However, the worst fears ended up being true after tests, as WWE announced that Rollins tore his ACL and MCL, would be out 6-9 months and would have to forfeit the title immediately.

With the title vacated, the WWE quickly announced that there would be a tournament held at Survivor Series to crown a new champion. The complete format isn't known yet, but it's a fair bet that there will be qualifying matches on the upcoming Raws, with the final four or right competing at Survivor Series.
This wouldn't be the first time that a tournament for a vacated WWE title was held at Survivor Series. In 1998, the title was vacated (in storyline, not for an injury) and they held the “Deadly Game” tournament to determine the champion. The Rock aligned with Vince McMahon to become the Corporate Champion at the end of the night.Obviously, this is a devastating blow for the company. Rollins had been one of the most consistent parts of the shows for months, and while his reign wasn't perfect, he had done a tremendous job with the title. So to have the rug pulled out from under him at this point is painful.

Even if he was going to lose to Roman Reigns at Survivor Series, we still would have been able to see a series of matches between them, and who knows what he would've been involved with at WrestleMania, possibly even the Shield triple threat. So that's frustrating.

The fact that it also comes when Randy Orton is injured, John Cena is on a break and Brock Lesnar probably not returning until January, it's a major hit for a company already struggling with ratings against Monday Night Football.

Now, as far as the future goes, things have suddenly become very interesting in the WWE. There seemed to be two paths, and really just two paths, for the WWE title on the Road to WrestleMania. Either Rollins or Reigns had the belt, and likely the other would be involved. Now, everything is open.

Yes, Reigns is still the odds-on favorite to win this tournament. But there's a chance, if they wanted, to make him a heel champion, which would have been impossible if he won against Rollins. Sheamus is very much in play, and if they were looking for a transitional champ, that's a possibility now. It would've been hard to see Sheamus as a two-month champion at this point in the calendar before. Dean Ambrose is also a factor, and the Reigns/Ambrose final would make a lot of sense here. It's also a chance, if they want, to really create a new main eventer out of this that would've had a hard time finding their way into the title picture before. With a tournament, you could all of a sudden believe a Cesaro or Kevin Owens could possibly find their way into the finals, if not winning it.

It's all about the writers now. Some of the best work that WWE has ever done happened when they were forced to get creative to work around injuries. So, do they play it safe or take a risk? Many people (reasonably) don't have a lot of faith in the writing team, but this is a chance for them to really make things wild. If nothing else, all of a sudden Survivor Series has become one of the most intriguing pay-per-views in quite a while.
