For the first time since practices began earlier this month, Kansas State basketball players will get a taste of outside competition when the Wildcats host an exhibition game against Emporia State at 7 p.m. tonight.
“It will be a good experience,” K-State junior Wesley Iwundu said. “We are ready to start. It will be exciting playing a different team, not just the guys on our team. I am ready for it.”
In past years, K-State has opened its exhibition schedule with a scrimmage against a notable opponent, played behind closed doors in an empty arena. The scrimmages are supposed to be secret, with no score or statistics released.
The Wildcats scrimmaged Nebraska and Iowa the past two seasons, followed by a single exhibition at Bramlage Coliseum, and K-State coach Bruce Weber considered them helpful.
But he wanted something different for this team. With a young roster, Weber lined up two exhibitions to help the Wildcats adjust to playing in front of a crowd.
“We felt the more times they could get in front of people the better it would be for us,” Weber said. “If you have an experienced team you would rather (scrimmage) against a good team. We have done a top-20 team the last couple of years.”
“It is a different feeling. You don’t have any crowd. You are in this massive gym, and it is just the coaches and the managers. You don’t get that feeling of a game. But if you have experienced guys and you aren’t worried about playing in front of people and the crowd and how they are going to react I think it is good to go against somebody else.”
Weber is glad the schedule this year worked out the way it did. Freshman forward Dante Williams won’t play tonight, and junior forward D.J. Johnson and point guard Carlbe Ervin are both doubtful with injuries. Weber said he doesn’t know who will be in the starting lineup.
